Breaking boundaries: Tackling my first solo 10k and loving every minute of it.

SO I DID IT! I plucked up the courage to take on a 10k running event alone, without my usual support by my side, although my VIM crew were always a text away. I was nervous, anxious, and well, alone.

The drive to the event was daunting and the closer I got, the bigger the nerves. I arrived and stared at the course, knowing I’d soon be running it and I didn’t know what to expect. The usual feeling of having my support with me wasn’t there, it was just me vs. the course.

I got myself signed in, put my number on, and found my position in the queue. That part was easy as I’m currently stood at the back of the pack, but we have to start somewhere. As VIM founder said, “All we have to do is pluck up the courage to take part and ultimately, it’s for a healthier tomorrow.”

The bell went and it was time to go. I started off slightly quicker than I anticipated and when I realised, I slowed down slightly, reserving myself for the last couple of miles. My calves were tight, but I felt really strong so it’s clear that my recent training set out by John Stocker is paying off.

Middle of the event I was comfortable so I picked up the speed as planned and as always, I met some lovely people. One lady I spoke to was struggling but we talked through it and kept up the pace to finally finish in 1:17:53.

I learned a lot about myself. I can do it alone, I am stronger than I previously realised, and working on ourselves is essential for our mental health. A HUGE shoutout to VIM- without you, I wouldn’t be doing this. You’re all amazing!

Thanks for reading, everyone!
